DUTCH SPORT HORSE SALES CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY AT PEELBERGEN EQUESTRIAN CENTRE

Peelbergen Equestrian Centre is set to host two prestigious auctions back-to-back this September. On September 23rd and 24th, the Dutch Sport Horse Sales will celebrate its 20th anniversary, followed by the 24th edition of the Limburgse Veulenveiling on September 25th. These milestone events have become a highlight in the equestrian calendar, drawing international attention for their consistent presentation of top-level show jumpers.

Dutch Sport Horse Sales

Since its inception in 2002, the DSHS has grown into a significant platform for discovering future champions. Originally focusing on younger horses, the auction has adapted over the years to meet market demands, now featuring a selection of five, six, and seven-year-old horses known for their exceptional potential.

Michel Hendrix, a member of the organizing committee, reflected on the auction’s growth, “We have always focused on selecting the best young jumpers for this auction. Horses with top level potential for the future. That has not changed.” The success of DSHS is a testament to the committee’s dedication, with each auction attracting both loyal participants and new enthusiasts eager to invest in young talents.

The event is a year-round effort, with the selection process beginning as soon as one auction ends. The goal is to present a diverse and versatile collection that appeals to a wide range of equestrians, from top-level competitors to dedicated amateurs.

Limburgse Veulenveiling

The following day, Peelbergen will host the Limburgse Veulenveiling, which returns with its 24th edition. Building on the success of last year’s record-breaking event, the auction has attracted a broad and exceptional selection of foals, with over 80 foals set to be auctioned live on September 25th. An additional 50 promising showjumping foals will be available in an online auction, which closes on Friday, September 27th.

The Limburgse Veulenveiling, guided by the experienced team at Stal Hendrix, has consistently ranked among the top three foal auctions in the Netherlands. This auction is a vital platform for showcasing the exceptional young foals born and bred in the Limburg region, making it a must-attend event for serious buyers.

Oliver Fletcher’s Golden Farewell to Young Riders

On the very last day of the FEI Jumping European Championship for the Youth, British rider Oliver Fletcher delivered the performance of his career, securing the Young Riders individual gold medal. The victory marks a true milestone in Fletcher’s journey, as he adds to the history of British show jumping with his ninth European Championship appearance and sixth European medal.

Fletcher, riding Hello William, entered the final round of the competition in second position, trailing closely behind France’s Jules Orsolini. With an impeccable, flawless round, Fletcher’s outstanding performance guaranteed him a podium finish. The gold medal was confirmed minutes later when Orsolini, who had been in the lead, made an unfortunate fault on the wall, handing the top spot to Fletcher.

“It’s an emotional win for me and my family,” Fletcher shared. “My father couldn’t be able to be here for a week but he said if I was in a good position, he would have tried to come out. Our farrier back home, Andy, he was amazing, drove him out and they came for the day. It was unbelievable.”

Immense gratitude was shown to the owners too, “They are everything, without them I wouldn’t be where I am right now, sticking with me through the good and the bad. Hello William is the horse of a lifetime, I will never ride a horse like him again. We had a few bumpy riders along the way, but my god I have never ridden a horse that loves you as much and tries as much for you. Everything is down to the horse, and of course to the owners for sticking by me.”

At his fifth European Championship appearance and in his last year as a young rider, Jules Orsolini secured the bronze medal, narrowly missing out on gold. “It’s the life of a show rider; sometimes the poles stay up, sometimes they fall. I’m very happy for Ollie and proud of my horse, she jumped really well the whole week. It’s her third European Championship in a row and she has improved every year. I am really happy finishing like this,” Orsolini remarked.

Fifth European appearance too for Ireland’s Francis Derwin, key member of the Young Riders gold medal-winning team, who continued his clear round streak ending in a silver medal.

In a noteworthy performance, 2023 Junior Gold Medalist Anastasia Nielsen from Monaco, who decided to move up to compete in the Young Riders category one year ahead of time, barely missed the podium, finishing fourth.

For Fletcher, this victory is a perfect capstone to his career as a young rider. Looking ahead, he plans to enjoy the moment and is looking forward to what next year, and the senior category, has in store for him.

Aleksandra Hearst Secures Spain’s Third Medal with European Championship Gold

Aleksandra Hearst has brought home the third medal for Spain at this Europen Championship, clinching gold in the Children’s Individual Jumping category. This achievement adds to her impressive winning streak, which includes victories on home soil, in France, and at the Nations Cup in Hagen, Germany.

Hearst was overjoyed, saying, “I am just so happy, it is incredible, I’m still lost for words, I think I will be for a bit, the euphoria and all.”

The final jump-off was closely contested, with Hearst, Finland’s Sani Illi, Germany’s Brianne Beerbaum, Ireland’s Charlie Flynn, and the Netherlands’ Liv Linssen all starting with 4 penalties. Time was the decisive factor in determining the medals, with the margin between the gold and bronze medals being a mere 0.45 seconds.  Hearst secured her victory with 30.74 seconds, narrowly edging out Illi, who finished at 30.86 seconds, and Beerbaum, who took bronze with a time of 31.19 seconds.

Despite a fault in the final round, Hearst and her 12-year-old gelding, Corelien, managed to regain the lead. Hearst noted, “When you are there everything goes so fast, you don’t have time to think or to worry, you just go ok I got 4 now, let’s see if I can get it with time and still get a win.”

For Brianne Beerbaum, this competition marked the end of her journey in the Children’s category as she prepares to move to the Junior level. “It’s an amazing feeling to compete here, I have been working hard to try and get an individual European medal. After yesterday I had a bit of a disappointment, having one down, but today we fought, had clear rounds and a fast jump-off, and that was enough, we are very happy with that. I al looking forward to the German Championship, preparing for bigger heights, and of course to my debut as a junior next year.”

Olivia Alvarez García Crowned Queen of Juniors European Championship

The 2024 Junior Jumping European Championship concluded with a stunning victory for Spain’s Olivia Alvarez García, who delivered flawless performances throughout the competition. Riding Gazquine Tag, the Spanish rider did not touch a single rail, securing her the gold medal and the title of 2024 Junior European Champion.

Despite a brief rain interruption, the event resumed under a beautiful sunset, setting the stage for the crowning of the champions.

Stellar Podium Performances

The silver medal was claimed by Thijmen Vos of the Netherlands, who rode Cadillac Z. When asked about his silver achievement, Vos emphasized the role his family played in his journey to the silver medal. 

“It’s amazing. You’re dreaming of it and then it happens. We have an amazing team, the whole family has been working together for a long time, doing everything we can. I have to thank the co-owner of Cadillac Z, A. Vos, and of course my father, grandfather, my trainer, my mother, just the whole family really. We worked so hard for this and then when it comes it’s just super”. The support from his family and the team was evident, proving that it truly takes a village to raise a champion.

France’s Ewen China took the bronze medal with Bacchus d’Ecames, demonstrating unbelievably steady nerves in challenging weather conditions. Commenting on his performance, China noted, “Did I think I was going to be on the podium before the final? You know, the horse was in good shape, in the team final he did well but the courses were technical and quite long. I was thinking maybe it is too much for him for his first European Championship but he kept jumping amazing, we only had one fault.”

Celebrating the Champions

Chef D’Equipe Reyes Martin expressed her pride in Olivia Alvarez García’s outstanding performance. “I am very proud of my rider, well done Olivia, and also to all the other riders, congratulations, great sport today. I think the course designers did a superb job with the courses this week, so thank you again for having us here.”

It’s Coming Home: Team GB Wins Children Team Gold Medal at FEI Jumping European Championship

In a win that has filled the British public with pride, Team GB won the Children Team Gold Medal at the FEI Jumping European Championship. This historic victory was made possible by the exceptional performance of the Children team and their dedicated coach, Clare Whitaker.

Many tried, Clare Whitaker made it: remember today as the day Great Britain got the better of Spain in a European title! Rumors are swirling that there will be an official petition to appoint Clare Whitaker as head coach of the football team, but football fans shouldn’t hold their breath—Clare Whitaker is sticking to show jumping.

In a press conference mediated by Speaker Matt Millin, the excitement and pride were palpable.

Matt Millin: “The phone has not stopped ringing, the government wants you as prime minister, the football team wants you as manager, what are you going to do, are you going to stick with horses?”

Clare Whitaker: “That would be a very challenging job, I know a lot about show jumping not as much about football so I think I will stick with horses!”

Matt : “What a success for you as well, a brand new team debut in the world of the Europeans, let’s be honest we have got some quality here right now.”

Clare: “Yes we have. We worked hard this summer, we improved, we have one horse from last year which I am very pleased to have stayed in the country, which is Tabby’s horse. He jumped lots of clear rounds, then Emily has done it before but this time with a different horse and I am really pleased how every single one of them contributed to the results this week.”

Matt: “You have been team manager for many years, but every time you win a gold is special, it has to be.”

Clare: “It is very special, there are so many countries now and it is very difficult to win. You have to keep jumping clear rounds, and children do not have to get carried away thinking it’s easy, because everybody has got good horses now and it is not, it is actually really difficult.”

Matt: “Tabs, where do I start with you. We think you are the youngest ever European gold medal for Great Britain! Only 11 years old. Three clears out of three, have you just got no nerves?”

Tabby Morgan-Evans: “It is always adrenaline; it is not really nerves. I always think if you get nervous it’s just excitement!”

The Children of Team GB are the living definition of what it takes to perform under pressure, with each rider playing a crucial role in the team’s gold. The standout performance by 11-year-old Tabby Morgan-Evans, who delivered three clear rounds, was beyond expectations, and it was only one example of the great potential within the team. Clare Whitaker’s experience and the riders’ hard work throughout the summer resulted in a well deserved first place. Joining Team GB on the podium were Belgium with the silver medal, after an exciting jump-off with Spain, who took the bronze.

Second Consecutive Young Riders European Title for Ireland

Let’s not call it Irish luck. James Kernan’s Team defended the 2023 YR European Champion title with pure talent.

Yesterday’s win marks their second consecutive gold medal, demonstrating their unwavering dominance in their category.

James Kernan’s team, consisting of Max and Tom Wachman, Niamh McEvoy, Francis Derwin, and Rhys Williams, delivered an outstanding performance with clear and consistent rounds throughout the rounds. The team’s early lead and consistent execution made sure their victory was never in doubt.

With a clear advantage gained in the previous rounds, the Irish team could afford to leave some poles on the ground in this Young Riders Team Final presented by Ashford Farm.After an unfortunate eight faults for Niamh McEvoy with Jasmim Da Hermida, Tom Wachman and Cathalina S’ incurred in just one pole down. It was Francis Derwin’s clear round on Flexi K (ISH) that secured the title, ending the race to first place early. Max Wachman and Kilkenny (ISH) wrapped up the competition with one pole down after the victory was already in their pockets.

Later in the press conference, a proud James Kernan, Youth Chef D’Equipe, could not keep but praising his riders hard work: “I’m incredibly proud of them, they really do give everything they got each and every time. In Ireland we are spoilt for choice when it comes to good riders, these guys are simply exceptional.”

In the team final standings, Ireland secured the gold with a score of 1.74-4-8/243.96, followed by France with 7.98-15-0/240.00 and Belgium with 6.89-16-5/241.52.

Individually, the Irish riders are also in strong contention, with four members in the top 12. Tom Wachman currently lies in fifth, Francis Derwin in sixth, Niamh McEvoy in tenth, and Max Wachman in twelfth overall.

Vive la France! We have a new Junior Team European Champion!

Only one rail touched the ground yesterday for Olivier Bost’s Junior Team, with Capucine Prudhomme, Jack Conlon Gateau, Ewen China, Nohlan Vallat, and Toscane Carloni Richard keeping the lead of the Stal Hendrix Junior Competition until the very end.

Great Britain, Spain and Ireland delivered clear round after clear round, closing the gap with France. A British takeover seemed possible, until a clear from Ewen China locked in the gold for France.

Fighting for second place were Great Britain and Spain, in a jump off that saw the Spanish team put on quite the show for their supporters, granting them the silver medal, and Great Britain the bronze.

Impeccable the performance of the German team today, who’s fault sheet was left untouched, ending with five clear rounds that secured them a fifth place. 

“We put the work in, we prepared, we went to training sessions, and we were ready.” Says Jack Conlon Gateau, glancing over at Chef D’Equipe Olivier Bost, who continued: “We have a good federation, good trainers, good riders, a good President, good horses, and good owners. So one thing left to say is thank you for putting up a big, good show, I think the best show we have been to in a long time.”

Officiële Aankondiging: Deelnemers Europees Kampioenschap Springen Voor de Jeugd Bevestigd

Na bevestiging van de FEI is Peelbergen Equestrian Centre in Kronenberg verheugd om de officiële deelnemers van de aankomende Europees kampioenschap springen voor de jeugd aan te kondigen. Dit evenement, dat plaatsvindt van 15 tot en met 21 juli, zal maar liefst 305 deelnemers uit 29 landen verwelkomen, zowel in team- als individuele competities.

Een trotse mijlpaal voor Kronenberg 2024 is de brede deelname in verschillende categorieën:

  • 20 landen vaardigen een team af in de Children-categorie.
  • 24 landen zullen een team hebben in de Junioren-categorie.
  • 17 landen zullen vertegenwoordigd zijn door een team in de Young Riders-categorie.

PEELBERGEN IN FINAL COUNTDOWN TO WELCOME FUTURE CHAMPIONS AT THE FEI EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

KRONENBERG – From July 16 to 21, Peelbergen Equestrian Centre will be the scene of the European Championships Jumping for Young Riders, Juniors and Children.

As the first European Championship to be held in Peelbergen, and the only FEI Championship happening in the Netherlands in 2024, expectations are high.

Less than a month until Europe’s best show jumping young talents gather in Kronenberg to compete for the European Individual and Team titles, and especially proud is Ken Ruysen, event director.

“Awarding this European Championship to de Peelbergen is thanks to the trust we have built over the years. Not only are we ready to host a championship of this format, we are set on making it a unique event,” Ruysen explained.

Memories to last a lifetime

The opening ceremony on Monday 15th July will mark the official start of the event, with the first competition set to start at 14.30 the very next day. From Tuesday till Sunday, riders will compete for the individual and team medals in their age category, in competitions ranging from 1m25 for Children up until Young Riders’ 1m50 classes, on both sand and grass arenas.

“The young riders we welcome in July will be making memories in Peelbergen that they will look back on in their later careers. If you take a look back at riders who competed in the European Championships for Young Riders in the past, you will see today’s top riders, such as Steve Guerdat and Willem Greve. That Peelbergen may be part of that road to the top for some of the participants is very special.”

Creating an EC setting

Since the venue organises weekly competitions, creating an European Championship setting is a must. The centre is already set up for 3* level events, “we work hard to have perfect grounds and offer top facilities every competition. So for this European Championship we are not necessarily raising the bar, but we will focus more on the decoration and creating that special atmosphere that is an European Championship.”

Decorations and new obstacles, made especially for the European Championships, and various side events to entertain both horse lovers and day-trippers are on the program. Besides the evening program, which promises different kinds of entertainment every night of the event, Peelbergen chose to organise Walk Grandorse, a walk in the beautiful forest of Grandorse surrounding the centre, on the last day of the Championships, Sunday 21st.

The goal is to create more involvement with riders as well as with the local community, and make it an unforgettable event not only for the participants, but for everyone.

ZONDAG 21 JULI, VERZAMEL JE FAMILIE VOOR EEN WANDELING IN HET BOS VAN GRANDORSE!

Peelbergen wacht op je om mee te doen aan Walk Grandorse! Deze editie heeft twee verschillende routeopties: je kunt kiezen voor een korte route van 2,5 km of een langere van 5 km!Walk Grandorse is volledig gratis en vindt plaats op de laatste dag van de FEI Europese  Kampioenschappen voor de jeugd, wat betekent dat je twee geweldige evenementen kunt combineren voor een onvergetelijke zondag in de natuur met familie en vrienden!

 

Wat kun je verwachten van deze editie van Walk Grandorse?

Een kijkje van dichtbij bij een cross country training, de binnenkant van paardentransportwagens, een bezoek aan de Emmers Equestrian winkel, activiteiten voor kinderen en nog veel meer!

Het evenement wordt gehouden tijdens de FEI Jumping Europese Kampioenschappen in het bos van Grandorse, thuisbasis van onze internationale eventing competitie, Outdoor Horst.

Gasten worden ook uitgenodigd om de faciliteiten van Peelbergen te verkennen en te genieten van een gratis drankje door de voucher in te wisselen.

 

Hoe kan je deelnemen?

Deelname is gratis, meld je hier aan!

Om deel te nemen aan Walk Grandorse, vul je eenvoudig het registratieformulier in en sluit je aan bij het aangewezen startpunt, de ingang op Travers 5, Kronenberg, voor Emmers.

 

Programma

Je kunt de wandeling starten tussen 10:00 en 15:00 uur. Bij aankomst zullen onze vrijwilligers je de route, een plattegrond van de show, het programma van de FEI Europese Kampioenschappen en een voucher voor een gratis drankje geven!

Je kunt beginnen met een drankje en de wedstrijden bekijken, of je kunt je weg vinden naar het prachtige bos en je wandeling beginnen!

Verken de arena’s, neem deel aan speciale activiteiten voor kinderen, en wandel dan door onze glazen huis bar en restaurant richting het bos. Hier kun je wandelen in het mooie Grandorse, een kijkje nemen bij onze cross country sprongen van dichtbij en een cross country training bijwonen!

Als je terugkomt van je wandeling, of voordat je gaat wandelen, kun je twee speciale prijsuitreikingen bijwonen. We hebben er één om 13:00 uur en één om 17:00 uur. Vergeet niet het showprogramma te bekijken en mis de kans niet om de Nederlandse ruiters en het team aan te moedigen!

 

Het beste van alles? Deelname aan Walk Grandorse is volledig gratis, wat een geweldige gelegenheid biedt voor iedereen om zich onder te dompelen in de paardensportgemeenschap.

Aiming for Gold: Chef d’Equipe Joyce van Rooijen-Heuitink on Team NL’s Para Dressage Journey to Paris 2024

After the Dutch Championship, the Peelbergen CPEDI3* of this weekend offered Dutch riders another crucial opportunity to secure a spot on the Paralympic Team for Paris 2024. This competition is the second of three observation moments, with the final one set to take place in Deurne later in July. We sat down with Chef d’Equipe Joyce van Rooijen-Heuitink to to get a glimpse into the meticulous process of selecting the team and the high hopes for Paris 2024. 

Hello Joyce, thank you for being here with us today. This weekend marks a key moment in the selection process for the Dutch team heading to Paris 2024. You’ve had an impressive career as an International GP Rider and Trainer, and an FEI Level 2/3* Judge. Now, as Head Coach of the Dutch Paraequestrian Team, what are the key factors you consider when selecting riders for the team?

For me, it is very important that they have consistent results. Of course, one show can go less well than another, or sometimes the scores can be less positive, but I like to see consistent riding. Harmonious riding is also very important. The judges need to like the full picture. Then you have reliable horses, and that is a big thing to me. Being able to rely on a horse to go into a big arena and not get too spooky is crucial because everything in Paris will be spooky and the atmosphere is crazy. So these bombproof but still very rideable horses are key. Riders must be able to keep their cool as well, especially in the team competition. Representing your country can be a nerve-wracking moment, and they need a good mindset for that.

Team NL has been doing great this weekend, winning the Team Competition too. Are you satisfied with what you have seen so far?

Yes, absolutely! They have been doing amazing. I have quite a few very experienced riders that have been through it all already. They rode so many championships and have proven that both they and their horses can deal with the pressure and have a lot of routine. But you are also always looking out for new riders and new horses to build for the future, and I saw some very promising things this weekend.

Can you share your expectations for Paris this year?

I think my riders and horses are that good, and we can aim for gold. Over the past years, we won quite a few titles at the European and World Championships, and in Tokyo, we came just second. So, actually, the team Olympic gold is the one medal that has been missing, not just for me but for everyone who has been competing over the past few years. So, we are all really aiming for that one and hoping to win it, but we know that hoping is not enough. We have to ride really well, and that’s what we aim for.

Lastly, we know all bets are off and nothing is set in stone yet, but if you could leave a message for the riders before Paris, what would it be?

Once you get to Paris, first of all, you have to ride well because when you ride well, you enjoy it more! But I would say just make sure you do everything you did before. Have the same preparation, ride the same around the ring and in the ring as you always did, and keep the same mindset. In that way, you get the same performance, and that’s the way to enjoy the competition the most, I think.
