“for good grass, there is only one word. And certainly for equestrian grass arenas, it’s only one word: roots.”

We had the chance to walk around our grass arenas and talk to the man behind their growth, Michel Poncelet, owner of Green Consult, engineering and consulting specialised in grass sport fields.

You may know Michel for his work with five stars equestrian venues, from turning Tops International Arena’s sand arenas into high performance grass arenas, to his years long collaboration with the Brussels Stephex Masters, where the heavy rain of this summer did not seem to leave the slightest mark, and more recently, for his work in Paris, transforming the gardens of Versailles in the perfect setting for the Paris 2024 Eventing.

From choosing the right grass varieties to innovative irrigation systems, Green Consult has been Peelbergen go-to consultant in our journey to achieve a five star grass arena, where the Youth European Championship will be held next year.

Hi Michel, thank you for taking the time! Tell our readers about Green Consult

Green Consult is first and primarily an agronomic study agency, we are based in Belgium, in Huy. We help our clients select the right products and develop projects, focusing mainly on grass-related projects such as golf courses and public gardens. We have worked on more than 100 golf courses and large projects such as Jardin du Louvre in Paris.

You work on a variety of different projects, how do you pick the grass for each one?

Around 10 years ago the law changed in Belgium to forbid the use of pesticide.
So we sort of were the pioneers in trying to find a good solution, a biological or organic one, to fight the diseases and other problems of the grass, and to improve its resistance too. So what we are doing is working on the species of the grass, you need to remember it’s a living material, which is very, very important.

That’s the key, so for example we are using different types of grass in the north of Europe than in the south.

So the grass that we have here is actually not the same grass that you can find in Spain, right?

No, it’s completely different! For example, in Spain, we consult one of the biggest shows of the world, the Sunshine tour. 2,500 horses jump on those grass arenas for 10 weeks straight. The grass we use then differs from what is suitable for winter shows. Each venue and event has its own unique requirements.

How do you start approaching a project? How did you start here in Peelbergen?

Every project starts with a climatological study and a complete soil study.

It happens more and more often that our projects are about growing grass on existing sand arenas. It’s crazy to think about, but it’s sterile soil. And we work on bringing life back in the soil, in artificial soil. We add components with bacteria and fungi. We give all of the natural components to the soil and maintain it to keep the grass living and strong enough for it to resist.

Here in Peelbergen it is very different, it is an existing natural soil. So after the analysis, chemical, physical and biological, we did the study. The study is made to know what kind of lava sand we should use to improve the structure of the soil, the resistance, and the mechanical resistance of the soil. We have to know when the shows are, how many shows are in the planning, how many riders you expect, if there are weeks of rest in between shows, basically all of the parameters, before we make a plan.

But it all starts with climatological study.

After that, we know how to tackle the issues: for example, here in Peelbergen we knew we needed to work on what we call granulometric composition. It means there were too many fine elements and when it rained, the risk of overflowing was higher. So we improved the structure of the soil, with some top dressing of specific sands of lava. At the same time, we did some spiking operations and we changed the grass composition with a mixture of special types of grass.

So we could say it’s Peelbergen’s own grass mixture actually. Does this mean every arena is kind of unique?

Yes, and we also love that we can constantly work and improve it by having our own test grass arenas at the office. We are riders and drivers so our grass arena is solicited enough;)

Next year we have one of the biggest appointments of 2024, the FEI Jumping European Championship, with the Young Riders jumping on grass. Will we see changes in the arena?

We started our work on this arena in October 2022, and it is an ongoing process. We will keep working on it this winter, after the last competition in September there is a very big operation of spiking, top dressing and overseeding.

I think it takes the know-how of an agronomic engineer to know when to do these operations, what products to use, when to analyse the soil to know exactly when you’re supposed to do what.

I’m in contact with the Greenkeeper weekly. Especially in the growing period, we check on everything, from irrigation to mowing.

What are the latest innovations you are working on?

Well, before, irrigation happened with sprinklers around the perimeter of the arenas. With this classic system, when it rains, the water often overflows, and you have to wait for the drainage to work. Now, there is a completely different system called ebb and flow. It works with a liner, like a swimming pool, a big swimming pool with two different kinds of sand at a depth of 30 centimetres, with pipes in the middle. This setup gives the water the possibility to go in and to go out. The water comes up with the capillarity of the sand, and it goes down with gravity. So, when it’s raining a lot, this kind of arena is quickly dry, a dream for both competitors and organisers.

To add grass on top of an ebb and flow sand arena is extremely difficult and seemed impossible at first. You see, the advantage of using the ebb and flow system on sand arenas is, beside quicker draining, that it keeps the ground permanently humid using 40% less water compared to a classic irrigation system, but this actually is an inconvenience with grass, because the water can kill some of the microorganism, including the good bacteria or fungi, that you need to let the grass grow.

And that’s the art, in fact, you have to know how to manage the irrigation and when to give some biological treatment at very specific moments.

The first test with ebb and flow system and grass was made in Montemedio, for the Sunshine Tour 10 years ago. This makes us the only ones with a decade long experience. The last one we worked on in Europe, was for the Brussels Stephex Masters, on four different arenas and around two hectares of grass.

Michel, one last question: what would you say is the secret to the perfect grass arena?

Besides the studies and the science, I would say that the grass we work with, it’s all naturally grown. That’s not the rolls of grass you see sometimes, it’s actually grown from seeds. A tailored made, unique mix of selected seeds, all of it. The growing process is natural, it’s nothing that was done somewhere and brought in. It’s all done on site.

Because for good grass, there is only one word. And certainly for the equestrian grass arenas, it’s only one word. It’s roots. You have to promote the roots’ growth all year round. With physical and biological operations, with good fertiliser, and at the beginning, you have to choose the good grass varieties. That’s very, very important. Finding the perfect fit for the climate, the region, for the weather, the show calendar, the types of shows. That’s what’s most important… And that’s of course our secret.

The CSI August has come to an end, and so did the first leg of the Youth Grand Slam 2023.

Peelbergen Equestrian Center proudly hosted the launch of this new series aimed at nurturing and supporting emerging talent in equestrian sports.

The Youth Grand Slam was born from the collaboration between three popular European venues, who got together to create a project where children, juniors and young riders compete for once-in-a-lifetime prizes, including access to 5 stars shows, financial aid, and invites for clinics held by legends of the sport.

After this weekend’s first leg in Peelbergen, where young athletes could get a taste of what possibly awaits them next year, at the FEI Jumping European Championships Youth 2024, riders will move to Slovakia to the official Olympic training centre, X-Bionic Sphere in Šamorín, on September 7-10. The series will then end on October 5-8, 2023, in the Equieffe Equestrian Centre in Gorla Minore, home of the FEI Jumping European Championships Youth 2023.

Weekend Results at Peelbergen Equestrian Center

The first leg of the Youth Grand Slam saw Logan Fiechter and Kordaat dominating the Young Riders category, with Yannick Janssen van Grunsven with Lugaignac des Pouplis standing out with a win on the last day. The Junior category saw Grete Veske winning on the first two days, first with Basic, then with Graal, only to leave space for Yves Willems’s win on Highway on saturday. The same pattern repeated in the Children Category, with Ella Wolleswinkel and Capone winning two days in a row, and Ali Alkharafi with Bisous Van Overis Z stealing them the chance for a hat trick on Saturday.

These results will add up in a scoring system that will proclaim the winners during the final in Italian Equieffe Equestrian Centre in Gorla Minore.

Beyond titles: prizes that matter

The Youth Grand Slam is not only about competition; it’s about offering a once in a lifetime chance to exceptional prizes.

Winners of each category will gain access and financial support for top sport events across Europe like CSI5* W Verona and CSI5* Geneva, and clinics conducted by legends of the sport: Albert Voorn for the Children, Juan Carlos Garcia for the Juniors and Young Riders, and for the best among the Young Riders, a two-week intensive training at Olympic medalist Gerco Schroder stable.

Besides the prizes, the experience itself is already a growing opportunity, explains Gerco Schroder, ambassador of the Youth Grand Slam 2023.

“The Youth Grand Slam gives them the opportunity to compete at top shows with great riders. When I was young I learned a lot from that, simply by going to nice places and looking at better riders: just from watching them you can already learn so much”.

Youth Grand Slam 2023 Ambassador Gerco Schröder and Peelbergen Managing Director Ken Ruysen. ©Matilde Tarchiani

“The series gives an incredible all round experience, and this is the whole concept. It is not only about competing at these great venues with riders like Gerco, Martin Fuchs, Harry Charles, during an international senior event, it is also about getting real support in their growth, from internships up to financial help.”

Says Ken Ruysen, Managing Director of Peelbergen Equestrian Center.

“Peelbergen Equestrian Center strives to not be merely a competition venue but to take an active role in supporting and encouraging this kind of initiatives that we strongly believe can grow our sport even further.”

Kronenbergen, 13 july 2023

“The noise pollution is the same, but the region has grown dramatically in the last 15 years.
dramatically grown, no more airbase fits into that”, the region warns.

Last Tuesday, horse owners of the region reunited at Peelbergen for an information evening about the possible reaction of Air Base De Peel.

The meeting saw no less than 200 people gathering on our grounds, among them representative of the Horse Owners, Defence, regional representatives, and emeritus professor Marianne Sloet, discussing the consequences of the possible reopening of the airbase on the region and the horse sector.

The meeting, with the cooperation of Limburg Paardensport, the LLTB, and Peelbergen Equestrian Centre, was kicked off by moderator Sander Kleikers. After a
word of welcome, Ellen Poels, Mathijs van Asten and Roy RuRen spoke briefly on behalf of the Horse Owners group:

We want to make the horse sector even more aware of the possible consequences. In addition, it is in everyone’s interest to offer the government and defence insight into the impact the reopening will have.” says Ellen Poels.

The flying behavior of Apache and Chinook helicopters is already creating dangerous situations, sometimes resulting in accidents. Even more flight hours and F35 fighter jets will undoubtedly bring more stress to the horses and their keepers“, adds Roy RuRen.

Impact on animal welfare and economy

In cooperation with the province of Limburg, over the past 12 years the region and the sector have invested heavily in developing the province of Limburg into the equestrian hotspot of the Netherlands, with global ambitions. The economic growth of the sector over the years has increased exponentially, and from all over the world there is great interest in
stimulate that growth. “Defense’s plan not only puts animal welfare at risk, but will
also have major economic consequences“, said Mathijs van Asten.

Defense Interest

After the introduction, an explanation was given by Colonel Jos van der Leij of the Ministry of Defense. He explained the reasons behind a possible reopening of the De Peel Air Base, and what issues and interests are involved. The Ministry of Defense has paused the process for reactivation to first determine what the nitrogen contribution is and expects to take a dcision after the summer in coordination with the region.
Defence is aware of the complexity and problem that the reopening of the airbase entails,” Van der Leij explains. “But we are in a period where the security situation has seriously deteriorated in Europe. We need a bigger armed force with more equipment and people who need to be able to train to be deployed. NATO is our common security policy and to it we, as well as our allies, must contribute.

Stress in horses

Emeritus professor Marianne Sloet of Utrecht University gave an explanation about the stress horses can experience from helicopters and other jets and what consequences this can lead to. However, she concluded more objective research is necessary.

Constructive progress

The demand for more clarity from the government and municipalities was shared by many in the room. The goal of a constructive conversation with all the stakeholders involved and providing more clarity was brilliantly achieved by the Horse Owners group.
Carefully informing and drawing attention to the problem is key. However, the work is far from over for the organization.

Taking an active role in the community and facilitating these events, do you want to know more about the possible reopening? For more information visit the Defence dedicated page,

From a press release from Werkgroep Bezorgde Paardenhouders (Eva van den Adel)

Kronenbergen, 8 june 2023 – the schedule is approved, the invites are out: Peelbergen is ready to welcome the para dressage athletes during upcoming CPEDI3*/2*, a crucial step for the riders who hope to be selected for the European Championship and consequently, for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

The event, set to take place from 16 till 18 June 2023, will gather top para dressage athletes from around the world, including two of the home crowd’s favourites, Sanne Voets and Rixt van der Horst. We had the privilege of interviewing these two athletes, who shared their thoughts on the competition and aspirations for Paris 2024.

Renowned para dressage rider and inspiration to many, Sanne will be taking her long time partner Demantur to Peelbergen. With an impressive track record and a Rio 2016 gold medal in the pocket, Sanne’s eyes are on Paris 2024.

“We have done quite some shows at the Peelbergen in the past already and we hope to ride here next year, in preparation for the Paris Games, again. It is nice to know there is a show with great facilities on the schedule and it’s a plus that the show ground is quite close to where I live.”

Rixt on the other hand, is taking on her new project Eisma’s Akuna Matata, a mare who joined her stable only late last year but hold so much hope for the future:

The Dutch championship was our first show after a long pause. Right now we are busy building up the partnership. I think it’s getting better each day and I hope to show it in Peelbergen.”

Rixt, can you explain to us how the selection process works, what are the next steps on your Road to Paris?

“The show in Peelbergen is a must because it serves as a selection for the main appointment of the year, this time, it will be the European Championship. We now have three competitions for the coach to decide which riders will make the team: the Dutch Championship, the CPEDI in Peelbergen, then we have a little competition break before the third and last appointment in Deurne at the end of July. Then, the team for the European Championship will be announced. For the selections, consistency is key, Peelbergen is a good test for us, an international show with different judges can give the coach a good idea of where we stand on an international level.“

Sanne, how does this show fit in your calendar, after the NK and before Deurne, and contribute to your preparation for Paris 2024?

“Our outdoor season kicked off with the Dutch nationals just a week ago. The show at the Peelbergen is my next one. At the nationals, my horse Demantur RS2 N.O.P. and I were not at our A-game yet. My performance there was a good wake up call and since then training went really well. I hope we can show that progression at Peelbergen. Timing is great, not too long after the previous show and afterwards we have some time to recover and pick up again to work towards the third and final show that was appointed for us to get selected for the Europeans later this summer.”

Let’s talk about your horses, you are approaching this season with a very different background. Sanne, you are looking to confirm the bond with your long time horse Damantur, while Rixt you found yourself a new partner in Akuna relatively recently, and not without some obstacles on the way. Tell us more about these special horses.

Sanne: “Demmi is my special dancing partner! I rode him for over seven years already but we still have so much room for improvement left. He keeps amazing me with his power and elasticity and he has such a wonderful personality. The connection we have built over the years is something I value very much.He reminds me every day of finding that connection with myself. I strongly believe that that combination of soft skills, science and unconditional trust in and respect for one another is the fundament of our success and, even more important, of the joy we have in working together. Recently, I visited the Royal Equestrian Academy in Versailles and that left me even more motivated to work towards the Games in our own way, that focuses on our bond more than on results.”

Rixt: “I found Akuna a bit late at the beginning of last season, we had our first competition after only two weeks together and we didn’t have so much time to settle in and train. The hope was to use the winter season for that but unfortunately she needed some time off, so we started with her again this february and now it’s going really quick! She’s picking up good, gaining strength and condition and she is feeling better than ever. I feel like we just need some competitions to get in the rhythm but I am really looking forward to the next couple of years with her. She is a bit of a difficult mare, we sometimes call her ‘The lady’… but she also has a super sweet personality. It is even a bigger satisfaction to achieve something with her, I genuinely think she’s the best horse I’ve had so far.”

Rixt, tell us about what happened after Tokyo: how does it feel to find your way back to the podium in these important events?

It was a little bit of a tough period after Tokyo. We did not end the games as we wished, my horse got lame on the very last days and we could not ride freestyle, that was already very disappointing and she had a long recovery too so we really did not have the closure we wanted. It was really difficult to accept it was over after you worked so many years, to know it just ended like that and you have to start everything again. But It was also nice to have a little break and take some distance from the sport. I think I needed it, also mentally, I had the chance to see how it would feel and then make the choice: do I come back and look for another horse or do I just stop with the top sport? I believe it was a normal thought after a moment like that but then it just came to me: I got to try again, it’s not over yet, I have to do it one more time.

After Tokyo, my mare Findsley went back to the owner as it had been arranged but still it was a bit of a setback. We had worked together for four years and that’s a long time to build up the partnership. With the sport growing so fast, you need such a good horse to be on the podium, and I think Akuna can be that horse.

Sanne, you have an impressive track record, when thinking of Paris 2024, do you feel any pressure after so many wins and with expectations being high? How are you dealing with that and what motivates you to keep going?

“After winning gold at two consecutive Paralympic Games, one in Rio2016 and two in Tokyo2020, we are very eager to win some more at our next Games of course. But we take the road step by step, and most importantly: in a way that suits us. That is one of riding in a gentle and light way, really working together with your horse and with his well-being always as first priority. I work hard every day to be the best rider I can be for my horse, so I can do justice to all his qualities!”

Thank you Sanne, Rixt! We are beyond curious to see what the future holds for both of you.

As we witness the sport growing and the bar being ever so high, it becomes clear that this competition is a pivotal moment on the journey to Paris 2024. Here at Peelbergen, we are looking forward to welcoming spectators, enthusiasts, and the media to celebrate the spirit of para dressage. We will keep up to date with Sanne and Rixt’s journey and results during the CPEDI in Peelbergen.

We hope to see you and your families this Saturday at this 2023 edition of Walk Grandorse!
